“The former Hotel Kulm is situated in Monte Brè near lake Lugano on the border of Switzerland and Italy. It has a terrace with a view overlooking the lake and it is said to be one of the most beautiful views in the world. Thousands of people have been up there; enjoying the landscape, telling stories, sharing beautiful moments with their loved ones, taking pictures and filming the environment. Worldwide probably thousands of postcards have been sent from this exact location. I started to collect these postcards, all sent from this particular place. In the meantime I have a few hundreds of them. In June 2019 I took my camera and visited the former Hotel Kulm. I shot 20 cartridges of Super 8 film. These images and the postcards were the base for a whole new series of drawings, collages and objects, “The Lugano Project”, as well as a short film called “Paper Butterflies”, finished in 2020.”
Kris Martin creëert beelden uit objecten die vragen oproepen over begrippen zoals vergankelijkheid, identiteit en dood. Thema’s die al eeuwenlang de kunstgeschiedenis doorkruisen. Hij vervlecht in zijn werk dan ook kunstgeschiedenis, literatuur en mythes en bespeelt bovendien mechanismen zoals herkenning en vervreemding om ons te doen stilstaan bij de grotere vragen. In de tentoonstelling verschijnt dan ook een reeks fotografische prints die spelen met tijd, tijdelijkheid en vergankelijkheid, stenen die vallen of vliegen, tegenover een blakende hemel.
In 2014 vervaardigde Kris Martin het werk ‘Altar’, een metalen frame dat exact de vorm van de lijsten van het veelluik De Aanbidding van het Lam Gods (1432) van de gebroeders Van Eyck nabootst. Het werk staat onder andere opgesteld op het strand van Oostende en nodigt de bezoeker uit om door het ‘raam’ een blik te werpen op het landschap. De cadrage verandert naarmate je dichtbij of veraf staat. Het creëert een soort van tableau vivant.
